All about Windows

Windows

There are various different types of windows that are commonly used in the construction of a domestic property. Traditionally, windows would be made with a stone frame, but this has changed over the years and many older style properties have wooden framed windows. Modern houses tend to come with uPVC (plastic) windows as they are regarded as being less bother to maintain as they do not need painting on a regular basis.

Windows can be single glazed, doubled glazed or triple glazed. Single glazed windows are less efficient at stopping heat from escaping and they tend not to be used in newer properties.

Windows can open and function in a variety of ways and they are given different names according to their design.

Types of windows

Fixed windows

These are not designed to be open but are mainly used to allow light into an enclosed space or for decorative purposes, such as a small arched window above a front door on a period property.

Hinged Windows

This type of window has a design that allows the entire space to be opened up to the outside. They require less maintenance than sliding windows, although the hinges can occasionally buckle with wear and tear. Casement windows are hinged at the side, awning windows are hinged at the top and hopper windows are hinged at the bottom.

Pivoting windows

Some windows are mounted on a central pivoting hinge which means that the pane can be swung right round. This can be very convenient as it means that the window can be cleaned from the inside quite easily and safely. As a result, it is now a building regulation to fit pivoting windows to any floor above 9 metres.

Sash or sliding windows

Windows that slide within the frame are known as sash windows. They can slide either horizontally or to the left or right. Boxsash windows are the more common, with two panes that can be moved vertically. Sometimes, only the bottom pane can be moved and the top pane remains fixed. Sash windows use weights and pulleys to keep the window open and can need regular maintenance as a result.
