Building Health and Safety

First things first, we know it’s a bit boring but you really do need to put safety first with everything that you do. This is even more important when you are carrying out any sort of building works, both inside and outside the home.

The most obvious thing to think about before you even head to the shops for materials is whether you are up to the job. Be totally honest with yourself and know your limits. For example, if you know that you suffer a fear of heights, then don’t take on a project that involves working up a ladder. Get someone else to help instead.

Don't skimp on safety!

Wear the appropriate safety gear. Each job demands specific safety protection but in general you cannot go very far wrong if you wear overalls, use a dust mask and safety goggles. Remember to use appropriate gloves for your task, for example leather gauntlets in the garden or when operating machinery or PVC gloves when painting and decorating. Ear plugs may also be necessary if you will be operating a loud piece of machinery such as an electric saw.

Be sure to read all the safety warnings on the materials that you have purchased or the equipment you are using. Check the user instructions on the paint tin and make sure you have adequate ventilation as you are carrying out the work. If you are mixing plaster, be aware that it is an irritant so make sure that you do not breathe in any of the dust and keep your skin covered. If the skin is accidentally splashed, wash it off immediately.

We must all have memories of our first woodwork lesson at school and all the dire warnings that your teacher gave you regarding safety in the workshop. So, make sure that you apply the same rules at home. Tie long hair back and remove dangling jewellery or ties in case they get snarled up in equipment or covered in paint. Keep your workspace clear of clutter and don’t leave tools lying about. That garden rake in the cartoons might look funny when it whacks Daffy Duck in the face, but in reality, it could cause serious injury. Keep small children away from your working area.

If you have any flammable liquids, such as petrol for a lawnmower, make sure that it is stored in an appropriate canister and keep it in a cool place well away from any source of ignition. Check that the cap is on any such containers and is securely fitted.

If you are using a ladder, know the ladder safety rules. This means that you should use non-slip shoes and only tread on ladder rungs if they are dry. Place the ladder on level ground and make sure you centre your bodyweight when climbing. A general rule is not to allow your belt buckle or the centre of your waistband to go any further that the side rails of the ladder otherwise you will be reaching too far.
